Eris is nearly as large as Pluto but considerably more massive, and its discovery in 2005 sparked the debate that led to the redefinition of 'planet' and Pluto's demotion. Its name comes from the Greek goddess of strife and discord — fitting for the controversy it caused. Eris follows a strongly elliptical, tilted orbit and was, at the time of its discovery, one of the most distant objects ever observed in the Solar System.
